You may know or it may be the first time you find out, but the Happydent team has been campaigning for some time for this cause, of banning sweets in Romanian schools. Recently I have published an article with statistics of the healthiest people in the world, and those who occupy the first place enjoy this fact: sweets are forbidden in schools; and more than that, even at children’s parties.
The reasons that determined the initiation of this project were:
- Children and Teenagers – the categories of patients at risk of cavities – require strategic caries prevention plans that primarily include specific information about the following:
- Sugar added from snacks or desserts has a strong cariogenic potential.
- Insurance companies do not include services that cover the specific dental needs of children and teenagers.
- Cavities are a consequence of a disorder that is completely preventable by reducing sugar consumption.
- The poor dental health of parents does not condemn their children to the same dramatic fatality.
- The placement of a filling in a dental cavity does not exclude the risk of new cavities – The second International Collaborative Study of Oral Health Systems (ICSII)
- Although tooth decay and erosion do not directly endanger life, they can negatively interfere with the quality of the child’s life, the teenager’s, the young adult’s, with an impact on self-esteem and the masticatory ability. It impairs the pleasure of enjoying food and general health. In modern society, teeth have a very important role in facial appearance, speech, and communication and implicitly in social integration. CDC 2005, OECD 2011.
- Fluoride and fluorinated products have greatly reduced the risk of caries in countries with national water fluoridation plans, but tooth decay persists even in the adult and children populations who benefit from these measures. Therefore, all population groups – including those that benefit from fluoridation – could benefit from nutritional strategies either to reduce refined sugar or to promote foods with a carioprotective role.
- In children, the challenges of dental diseases also include school absences, poor diction, sleepless nights, cognitive deficits in school activities, or extracurricular activities.
- Dentistry – in its traditional “drill and fill” style is an expensive medical field – is the fourth largest scale in the most expensive services – being a challenge for the economies of even the most developed countries. In Romania, the Health Insurance House cannot cover the expenses of Pediatric Dentistry.
- Too many preschoolers – in the absence of early and reversible screening and interception programs for dental caries and due to its evolution and rampant complications – are at risk of dental treatment under general anesthesia.
