- What is nitrous oxide sedation? Nitrous sedation or “funny gas” is a method of conscious sedation, which induces the patient into a state of relaxation and cooperation, which allows the airways to be kept open and the patient to remain conscious, as well as maintaining all reflexes unaltered, the patient being able to easily communicate with the ones around him. The use of nitrous oxide in combination with oxygen produces a calming effect on the patient, thus not allowing him/her to feel any sensations of fear any longer.
- Why nitrous oxide (N2O) sedation?
The Council of European Dentists (CED) informs that up to 10-30% of adults and children may have some form of fear or anxiety related to dental treatment. - Why is conscious inhalation with hilarious gas recommended?
Because it prevents fear of dentists and calms down the anxious patient before and during the dental intervention which is of paramount importance in dentistry. - Do we have to be afraid of this inhalation method?
Not at all. Conscious inhalation has been practiced successfully for more than 150 years/ and in the US, 90% of dentists use this method. In France, since 2000, any liberal dentist (with a private practice) has been accredited to use it for the benefit of his/her patients.
- When is the use of nitrous oxide conscious recommended?
Especially when the patient is to undergo an invasive treatment such as an extraction, an apical resection, an implant, an endodontic treatment (nerve extraction), etc.
- Is it recommended and safe for children?
Conscious inhalation should be a standard technique for pediatric dentistry.
