Children and winter sports: what comes first … the mountains or the dentist?

[cmsms_row][cmsms_column data_width=”1/1″][cmsms_text]

The winter season has arrived in full swing, the holidays are approaching and we are preparing our equipment for winter sports and games or maybe we just received a new pair of skates as a gift … that’s so good! But have you known that protective (sports) splints are part of the mandatory sports equipment in sports that involve blows, falls, and body contact, more precisely in any activity in which dental injuries can occur? This is a detail to consider in the children’s daily life.

In the US, the American Dental Association and the Academy of Sports Dentistry recommend the protective splint to anyone who is at risk to injure their face or mouth when taking part in games such as football, softball, racquetball, handball, basketball, skateboarding, martial arts, boxing, acrobatics, gymnastics, cycling, horse riding, hockey, rugby, polo … etc! But we have often seen accidents resulting in dental fractures even at children/teenagers and adults who have fallen off their bicycles in the park or in the schoolyard or who have slipped on the ice at the ice rink or on skis.

If you still don’t know where/ how to buy this protective equipment (gutter), HappyDent Clinic Junior & Family team
informs you that you can choose one of the three options available on the market:

  1. Universal protection collars: these can be purchased from sports stores, have a good performance, and are ready to be worn. It’s at a very low price, which makes them accessible to anyone. However, they might mismatch the size of the oral cavity. They are quite bulky, making breathing and speaking sometimes difficult, and may not provide very good protection.
  2. Preforming “boil and bite” type protection collars: These collars are made of a thermoplastic material and can even be purchased from any sports shopping site. They are boiled in water, which softens them and then you bite on them, adapting themselves to the teeth by pressing them with the finger and the tongue, but the resulting uneven shape may not provide the best protection in case of trauma.
  3. Individual protection splints: it is designed and made in the dental office or dental technique laboratory based on the indications of the dentist, being the best option in terms of protective splints. It is preferred by athletes due to the good adaptation to the dental arches, the comfort it provides, and ensuring good protection – being available in 1-3 layers of protection.

Therefore, HappyDent Clinic Junior & Family recommends that you visit the dentist better preventively than therapeutically, better for a splint than for dental fractures!

HappyDent Clinic Junior & Family team wishes you health, enjoy the sanogenic benefits of sports but protect this invaluable aspect: having healthy natural teeth!
