The message conveyed at the Congress of the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is: take care of your child in advance and start with yourself!
A paraphrase of this message for parents basically looks like:
- Mum – your oral health and your family’s oral health matter to your child.
- It matters since pregnancy. A study on pregnant women undergone researchers from Budapest (Gorzo Istvan, Pal Attila, Novak Tibor and co.2008) showed that pregnant women with untreated teeth or periodontium gave birth prematurely or gave birth to lower weight babies as compared to a control group of pregnant women with good oral health.
- It matters, especially after birth. One of the highest risk factors for cavities in a young baby is the presence of cavities in the mother’s mouth. This is because the carious disease is multifactorial but especially infectious.
- The health of the whole family and the whole entourage also matters. All family members should keep their teeth healthy or treated and as clean as possible.
2. Mum – monitor closely and often your child’s teeth in advance.
- The cavities process begins as soon as the first baby teeth erupt. Your baby may have the first cavities as early as 5-9 months. To prevent this process from happening, it is important to clean your baby’s mouth after every meal since the age of 4 months. You can buy the so-called napkins – Spiffies ToothWipes – which are specially designed for this purpose and impregnated with xylitol. You can find them in Hungary but in our country. With age-appropriate toothbrushes, start brushing your child’s mouth as early as possible. As long as the child can hold the brush in his/ her hand, let them brush, but still, supervise them especially in the evening brushing. Children’s brushing should be supervised until the age of 8-9.
- From birth – as we are already taught – the child needs a medical home. Unfortunately, many parents still do not realize the importance of a medical home. You can ask a dentist to visit your home from time to time or visit him/her as soon as possible!
