Infant milk and its composition

HappyDent Clinic, together with the Romanian Society of Dentist Fear Management at Children, constantly draw attention – based on international scientific studies, corroborated with the anamnesis of mothers of children with baby bottle decay – that infant milk used in children’s nutrition is a cariogenic factor! Recently (June 2016) the Romanian Ministry of Health published the results of a study that confirms not only its cariogenicity but also other adverse consequences on general health!

Therefore, here is the list of synthetic substances in infant milk formulas, which do not exist in regular breast milk:

  • maltodextrin – food additive used as a thickening agent and sweetener can cause allergic reactions.
  • some producers used taurine in making infant milk formulas (Novolac 1, Humana 1, Nestle Nan Comfortis 1, Nestle Nan 1, Nuticia Aptamil 1 with Pronutra, Nutricia Milumil 1 and Nutricia Bebelac 1).
  • In some infant milk formulas (Hipp 1 Combiotic, Humana 1, Nestle Nan Comfortis, Nutricia Aptamil 1, Nutricia Milumil, Nutricia Bebelac 1) there are also dietary fibers. They are not part of the chemical composition of breast milk.
  • starch is not found in breast milk, and its introduction into infant milk formula can cause allergic reactions.
  • glucose syrup is a substance not found in breast milk, but it is used as an emulsifier.
  • probiotics introduced in infant milk formulas have a more commercial role because the infant’s intestinal flora develops after lactation.
  • The sugars introduced in the infant milk formulas produce instant coagulation of the milk and implicitly favors the appearance of dental cavities but also that of colic.
  • The vitamins included in infant milk formulas are synthetic and can cause dermatitis.

“Breast milk can only be replaced by infant milk in special situations related to certain medical conditions that do not allow breastfeeding. Unfortunately, infant milk has become a norm when it comes to feeding babies, and breast milk is the exception to this norm. The breastfeeding rate in Romania is at the lowest level recorded in the last 25 years.

In 2014, 71% of young mothers fed their babies powdered milk. This should concern us, given the scientifically proven disadvantages of using infant milk to feed babies, and young mothers should be encouraged and supported by specific long-term programs run by the Ministry of Public Health” says Assoc. Dr. Costel Stanciu – president of the Association for Consumer Protection in Romania.
