Food sources of calcium and dental remineralization

[cmsms_row][cmsms_column data_width=”1/1″][cmsms_text]

Do you know that the cheapest and most effective remineralization method is the one you can do yourself at home, with the help of calcium-rich foods? And do you know that it’s not just dairy products (cheese, yogurt, or milk) that are high in calcium?

The quality of teeth represents the status of the bone structure of the body. Therefore, the teeth must be solid. If they are solid, then the bones will also be solid.

Remineralization of teeth, as well as brushing them, can be done in the dental office, periodically, or at home daily! It’s your choice! If you want to choose the cheapest method, try home remineralization.

Cheese, yogurt, and milk remineralize our teeth and protect us from caries. But do you know that there are also food alternatives – rich in calcium – for those who suffer from lactose intolerance?

1. Soy: Soy foods are (dairy-free) nutritional alternatives rich in protein and calcium. Average adults need about 1,000 milligrams of Ca every day. One cup of soy contains 261 milligrams of calcium, plus 108 milligrams of magnesium.

2. Fish rich in fats: Milk, cheese, yogurt, and tofu cannot be effective sources of Ca without the daily dose of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. Most adults need about 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D each day, according to the National Institutes of Health. A can of salmon has a capacity of three ounces and 450 IU of Vitamin D, a can of sardines contains 178 IU and three ounces of canned tuna amounts to about 70 IU.

3. Bananas: Bananas are a well-known source of potassium, but they do not often appear on the list of healthy bone/dentition foods – however, at 422 milligrams of potassium for an average fruit, they should not be ignored.

4. Potatoes: Some research suggests that a high-potassium diet may counteract some of the calcium deficiency in the typical Western diet. Adults need about 4,700 milligrams of potassium a day. An average sweet potato has 542 milligrams, and an average white potato has 751 milligrams.

5. Almonds: Walnuts are similar to olive oil – they are rich in healthy fats and are a part of your typical Mediterranean diet, although recent studies have found a stronger relationship between dental health and a diet rich in olive oil than a diet rich on nuts. A one-ounce serving of almonds contains 80 milligrams of calcium, but it also has 80 milligrams of magnesium, another key player for strong bones/teeth. Average adults need about 300 to 400 milligrams of Mg per day, according to the US NIH.
